The Big Easy Deal is aimed at addressing the root causes of violence: systemic disinvestment, poverty, lack of economic opportunity, and isolation. To truly stop violence, we must build thriving communities and invest in affordable housing, violence prevention and intervention strategies, youth development programs, and community equity.
We need the City of New Orleans and City Council to commit to funding urgent and unaddressed community needs in the Big Easy Deal from the Fund Balance and the surplus funds from this year’s budget. The Big Easy Deal will help New Orleanians, especially our most vulnerable residents, begin to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and systemic inequity present before the beginning of the pandemic.
The Big Easy Deal asks for $147 million for:
Community Equity ($11.2 million)
Community Violence Intervention ($2 million)
Youth Services and Programs ($20.5 million)
Affordable Housing ($99 million)
